How much does artificial insemination cost in Kazakhstan?

Artificial insemination in Kazakhstan is considered not only a high-quality procedure, but also very cheap one, in comparison with the prices in foreign countries. President of the Kazakhstan Association of reproductive medicine, director of the EKO center, doctor of medical sciences, Professor Vyacheslav Lokshin told how much money Kazakhstan citizens can pay for a "test tube baby".

The first "test tube baby" in Kazakhstan was born exactly 20 years ago.

Annually the procedure becomes more and more popular as for last years at least 40,000 married couples addressed to clinics of IVF. At the same time the cost of the procedure practically doesn't change.

"Today the cost of the program in clinics of IVF constitutes from 300 to 450 thousand (900-1,500 USD), depending on what reactants are used. The cost of medicines constitutes about from 200 to 400 thousand (600-1,200) tenge. It turns out that the cost of the IVF program together with medicine averages between 750-850 thousand tenge (2,300-2,500 USD). That almost twice the cheapest way, than in the Russian Federation and in Israel. And three times cheaper, than in America. The prices today low and in spite of the fact that imported reactants are used, the Kazakhstan clinics understand social responsibility - people won't be able to allow more expensive procedure. The prices practically didn't rise," professor reported.

Today clinics carry out about 6,200 programs annually. According to Lokshin, not each married couple is able to afford so expensive procedure, otherwise, requirement would be much higher – to 12,000 programs a year.

"Today in this branch about 300 experts work. We admit the expert who has an experience not less than 5 years of work as the obstetrician-gynecologist to clinic of IVF, at the same time the doctor undergoes specialization. Specialization can be undergone in our leading clinics at departments of institute of improvement of doctors at institute obstetrics and gynecologies. That is, we actually train for ourselves experts in a workplace because it is very highly skilled work. And to train experts it is necessary not less than a year more that he trained in an out-patient department," V. Lokshin emphasized.

Let's notice that the IVF program is included in the guaranteed volume of a free medical care since 2010, in six years for the Kazakhstan families suffering from sterility 3,000 quotas are allocated.

"In 2010 110 quotas were allocated. Last year the number of quotas was 820. 590 million tenge were allocated for these purposes. This year 800 quotas will be made and somewhere 660 million are allocated the Program rises in price as all as the equipment import.

Today in a queue (for performing artificial insemination) there are at least 3,000 married couples across all Kazakhstan. In a year 800 married couples receive a quota. And if to get in a line, then approximately for 2-3 years this queue approaches. Especially many of those who stand in a line on a quota, do the program for their own means, and someone moves. That is why the queue moves," professor reported during the interview.

As Lokshin emphasized, the IVF program by budget funds is carried out to women who are in reproductive age. Young mothers shall make tests which confirm that "they have a normal allowance of ovaries".

"Women surely submit hormones' analysis. The IVF program by budget funds take spermatogenesis violations only of average and easy degree - that is male infertility of heavy degree doesn't enter to quotas. That is it, generally infertility which is caused by violation of passability of uterine tubes. We decided to spend the state money, considering that they won't be enough for all. Funds are allocated for optimum groups, there, where we receive the maximum result," V. Lokshin reported.

Due to the detailed inspection, according to professor, efficiency of the IVF program among the patients who addressed on a quota, makes 50% - above, than in general population of patients. Birth rate percent also considerably high – about 33%.

"It is necessary to tell that our legislation very loyal – under the law in Kazakhstan any programs are resolved: surrogacy, donorship, freezing of embryos and gametes. In some countries the legislation limits it therefore we have very broad access for people to treatment of infertility by means of auxiliary and reproductive technologies," V. Lokshin reported.
