12th talks on Syria scheduled for early February 2019

The 11th talks on Syria come to an end in Astana, during which Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov announced the date of the next meeting.

The ceasefire guarantor states in Syria - Russian, Iran and Turkey - agreed to hold the next round of talks that will take place in early February 2019 following the international meeting in Astana, BNews.kz correspondent reports.

Following the 11th talks on Syria, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov announced the date of the next meeting.

"The key item of our statement is that the guarantor states has announced to hold the next meeting in Astana in early February 2019. Kazakhstan urges all the parties to unite around the Syrian conflict and support the Geneva process, and it is important the UN is involved," said the Minister.

The Minister noted that owing to the efforts of the Astana process, the prolonged civil war passed its peak, and the shape of peace becomes more clear. It can be seen by the large reduction in the scales and intensity of hostilities.

"Lives of the peaceful citizens in many areas are returning to normal. More and more Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons attempt to return back home. Additionally, the recent exchange of the detainees carried out by the Syrian Government and the Armed Opposition within the implementation of the agreements reached in Astana is a remarkable achievement in implementing measures to strengthen the trust between the parties in conflict. Recognizing the recent progress reached in Suria, a greater amount of work is needed to make lives of the population of the long-suffering country peaceful," said Abdrakhmanov.

On November 29, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov met Syrian Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar Jaafari and a delegation of the Syrian armed opposition lead by Ahmed Al-Toma.

During the meeting, they discussed the issue regarding the return of refugees back to Syria. Kazakhstan confirmed its support to the efforts of the UN on a political settlement at the Geneva site.
