Convention on legal status of Caspian Sea to be signed at Summit in Aktau

Talks on legal status of the Caspian Sea have been held for over 20 years, they said in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

 

It is planned that at the fifth Caspian Summit with the paticipation of the heads of state of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia and Turkmenistan the issues of cooperation in economics, transport, protection of bio-resources and security will be discussed. It was said by Director of the International Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Arman Issetov, BNews.kz correspondent reports. 

"On August 12 the city of Aktau holds the Fifth Caspian Summit whithin which a Convention on Legal Status of the Caspian Sea will be signed. It is expected that the Summit will be participated by all heads of state of the Caspian states. It is planned to discuss issues of cooperation in economics, transport, protection of bio-resources, as well as security. As is known, talks on legal status of the Caspian Sea have been held for over 20 years and the result of these talks is the signing of the man document," said Arman Issetov. 

According to the Director of the International Legal Department, the document includes the provision regarding the division of the Sea area on the Caspian Sea, cooperation in the field of protection of bio-resources, fishing, as well as on laying pipes under the floor of the Caspian Sea. 

In addition, according to the Foreign Ministry, it is planned to sign a number of intergovernmental agreements within the Summit. 

"This agreement regards cooperation in transport, trade and economy, in the field of avoiding incidents on the Caspian Sea, as well as the protocols to the agreement on safety of the Caspian Sea that relate to the fight against organized crime, terrorism and interaction of cross-border agencies of the Caspian states. In addition, it is planned that before the Summit a meeting of the heads of the Foreign Ministries of the Caspian region is held on August 11," said Issetov. 

We note that Summit of the heads of state of the Caspian States is held on August 11-12 in Aktau.
