Golovkin will travel to Mexico, donate to earthquake victims

WBC, WBA, IBO, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) will travel to Mexico in the second half of October to make a donation to the victims of the earthquakes that have struck the Mexican nation, according to ESPN Deportes.

Promoter Tom Loeffler made the announcement this afternoon in the capital of Azerbaijan, during the start of the convention of the World Boxing Council. Golovkin is big hit with the Mexican boxing fans - who like his self-titled 'Mexican Style' of fighting.

In addition to Golovkin's visit, the World Boxing Council announced that it will help victims of natural disasters in places like Mexico City, Puerto Rico, Florida and Houston, and for this the sanctioning body requested the support of the promoters who want to cooperate in this venture.

For the time being, GGG can not travel to the WBC convention - because he wants to spend time with his family, but he will pay the sanctioning body a visit when he heads to Mexico, where he will be making a donation through the Carlos Slim Foundation, according to what Loeffler said in the convention.

Last month, Golovkin fought to a controversial twelve round split draw with Mexican star Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The WBC, on Monday, ordered the two boxers to engage in a rematch.

The WBC's order was head scratching, because Canelo has no interest in fighting for their middleweight title and rejected the opportunity to fight for their belt in the first meeting with GGG.

Regardless of the WBC's order, the rematch is already being negotiated by both parties with the idea of reaching an agreement before the end of the year. The second fight is being targeted for the Cinco De Mayo weekend date of May 5th, with Las Vegas and Texas as the frontrunners to host.
