Kazakh short track skater sets a new record of Kazakhstan at World Cup first stage
Abzal Azhagaliyev has won a silver medal, setting a new record of Kazakhstan for short track.
The first stage of the World Short Track Cup has finished in Calgary, Canada, where Kazakh Abzal Azhgaliyev has gained a silver medal, thus setting a new record of the country, BNews.kz report referring to Olympic.kz.
The first large international start of the new season was good for Kazakhstan's short track team. The athletes demonstrated their will to fight for the highest places at the world level.
Abzal Azhagaliyev's performance in the 500-meter distance can be called as a triumph. The athlete won silver, second only to Chinese Olympic champion Wu Dajing (39.915). Azhigaliyev's result - 40.136 seconds is a new record of Kazakhstan. Hungarian Olympic champion Shaolin Sándor Liu was third.
"The season's start was good. On the first day, I reached the semi-final but without a medal. And on the first stage's final day I made my way to the final and won the second place. In the final, I competed with three Olympic champions. The season has just started, I hope to bring more victories," said Azhgaliyev.
In the 1000m distance, Yerkebulan Zhamukhanov reached the main final and was fifth. Two relay teams competed in the final - women's and mixed teams. Both have won the fifth place. The women's team included Anastasia Krestova, Assel Taishmanova, Olga Tikhanova and Kim Iong-a.
Azhgaliyev will not perform in the second stage, where only part of the team will take part. The second stage of the World Short Track Cup will take place between November 9 to 11 in Salt Lake City, USA. The Cup's third stage will take place on December 7-9 in Almaty.
