Kazakhstan and India to make a new movie in Almaty

It is expected that the movie will be released in 2019.

Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Mr.Prabhat Kumar talked about the main areas of cooperation between Astana and New Delhi in an interview to BNews.kz correspondent.

- In what directions cooperation between India and Kazakhstan develops? Do the volumes of trade turnover between our states increase? Does the structure of imports and exports change?

- Relations between India and Kazakhstan are very well. As can be seen from the visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of India Sushma Swaraj to Kazakhstan in the past week. During the visit she met with her counterpart, Kazakh Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev, and with Kazakh Minister of Foreign Affairs  Kairat Abdrakhmanov. Both meetings were productive. In addition, the Indian Prime Minister and Kazakh President held a meeting at the SCO Summit in Qingdao. Also, the Indian Prime Minister visited EXPO-2017. Several meetings were held between our politicians over a couple of years. We expect Nursultan Nazarbayev visits India in the near future. As for the trade turnover between our states, it has reached 1 billion dollars since the beginning of the year, which is a good indication. That is by 50% more than in the same period of 2016.

- What sectors of economy and projects are of interest to Indian entrepreneurs in Kazakhstan? Does their interest increase?

- There is a range of spheres in which Indian entrepreneurs are interested: energy, textile and IT. Indian entrepreneurs demonstrate their interest in infrastructure projects of airports, pharmaceutical, medicine, tourism. Now, negotiations on cooperation in textile are held. One can say that a great number of projects is being implemented in all areas.

- India is becoming an important market for Kazakhstan. In the previous year, the flight from Astana to New Delhi was opened. How many Indian citizens visit Kazakhstan whether for work or tourist purposes? How many visas are issued annually for Indian citizens leaving for Kazakhstan, and for Kazakhstan citizens going to India?

- In the past year, 13 thousand visas were issued for Kazakhstan citizens, and 20 thousand for Indian citizens. These figures increase each year, as conditions for tourists are relaxed each year. For instance, electronic visas were introduced for Kazakhstan citizens going to India. It means that they should not come to the embassy to get a visa, but to apply for it online. Over the last three months, a visa regime for Indian citizens was relaxed. Also, a visa-free regime runs for a certain period. Registration is also relaxed. When Indian citizens would come to Kazakhstan for more than 5 days, they should register. This rule was cancelled.

- Does the flow of tourists from Kazakhstan to India increase? What cities are popular among Kazakhstan tourists?

- Many tourists come from Almaty, as flights from Almaty run each day, and from Astana – 4 days a week and all flights are full. We call it the 'Golden Triangle' – Delhi, Agra and Jaipur for tourists. But, of course, the beach tourism is also popular among Kazakhstan citizens, which is certainly – Goa. Also, we develop the new direction – Kerala, as well as other directions.

- How many Indian students are studying in Kazakhstan? Does their number increase each year? What specialties are they interested in? Do they come back to India after graduation, or they remain in Kazakhstan or the CIS countries?

- In Kazakhstan about 3200 Indian students are studying. All of them study medicine in such Kazakhstan’s cities as Karaganda, Astana, Semey, Almaty and Shymkent. The majority of them go back to India. Indian students mostly study medicine or engineering.

- As is known, Kazakhstan and India plan to make a joint movie. Would you tell us some more details?

- In general, it is planned to make several movies. The movie you are talking about will be made in Almaty. For this purpose, a large Indian company will be engaged, as well as technical staff and actors from Kazakhstan. For now, I cannot talk about more details, as negotiations are being held. It is going to be a large project. Owing to this, we believe that the tourist flow between the states will increase. It was planned that works would begin in August. We hope the movie will be released in the next year.

What other areas of cooperation are envisaged between India and Kazakhstan?

- We keep developing all areas – economy, culture. As I have mentioned, political relations of Kazakhstan and India are well established and these relations should affect on the development of other areas. The increasing number of Indian companies begins to interest in investment in Kazakhstan.

- We cooperate in the television and film industry. Astana has many Indian cultural centres that conduct lessons of yoga, national dances. In Astana they are conducted at Nazarbayev University,  Almaty also has the same courses. This year, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. On the occasion of his anniversary, a great deal of events will be held. Also, there is the street named after Abai Qunanbaiuly in New Delhi. One should remember sports events. In general, cooperation between our states develops well.

- Thank you so much for the interview, Mr.Prabhat Kumar.
