Developed city's indicator is presence of children on streets: Jan Gehl

Alima BOLATBEK, 21 November 2013 15:57 , Astana

Today, famous architect and urban design consultant Jan Gehl has paid a visit to Almaty, correspondent reports.

"A visit of such architect to Almaty is actual as in the current year we started master plan updating. Today we have gathered architects, designers, students - future architects. I think, this meeting will contribute to the development of our city and also creation of its attractive appearance,"Almaty mayor Akhmetzhan Yessimov said in the welcoming speech.
In turn, Jan Gehl told the audience about his work - creating cities for people. According to him, the most important factor in the planning of the city is a comfort for inhabitants.
"As for me, an indicator of the developed city and infrastructure of the city is the presence of children on the streets. In Copenhagen, children are everywhere - citizens carry them on special bikes, children go to school on foot, or by bicycles. It means that the ecology and infrastructure allow children to feel on city streets safely," Jan Gehl said.
Let's note, Jan Gehl is a consultant for city design. His work is concentrated on improvement of quality of life in the cities by reorientation of city design to pedestrians and cyclists. Jan Gehl participated in many projects of city design worldwide, including in improvement of life in New York, Moscow and London.
