Prison population fell almost two times over eight years in Kazakhstan – Minister of Internal Affairs
The prison population of the country has fallen from 57 thousand in 2011 to 35 thousand in 2018.
The Minister noted that the continuing trend of the decrease of the number of crimes. In the present year, the crime rate around the country has decreased by 12%. It was said by Minister of Internal Affairs Kalmukhanbet Kassymov as part of the report meeting, BNews.kz reports.
“Over the last years, the prison population of the country has fallen from 57 thousand in 2011 to 35 thousand in 2018. Fifteen years ago, Kazakhstan took the place below the USA and Russia on the number of prisoners. Now our country takes the 78th line,” said Kassymov.
He noted that in the future it is expected that the number of those who are sentenced to imprisonment will be lower, and that of those who remain at large will be under the supervision of the Probation Service. And, the Minister noted that an active work was need to prevent recidivism as 16% of the crimes are committed by the persons previously convicted.
