The White House highlights the role of Kazakh peacekeeping mission in Lebanon

The peacekeeping contingent takes part in the UN mission to keep the peace and security in Lebanon for the first time in the history of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 

 

The U.S. officials noted the efforts of Kazakhstan in the UN Security Council and the contribution to the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, Deputy Secretary for Central Asia Alice Wells told following a review session of the Kazakh-U.S. Commission for an enhanced strategic partnership, BNews.kz correspondent reports. 

"We also witnessed that Kazakhstan has become the first country in Central Asia to take part in peace initiatives. It is about the initiative in Lebanon, which is Kazakhstan's significant step once again underlining the leading role of your country," said Alice Wells.

Note, this year the peacekeeping contingent takes part in the UN mission to keep the peace and security in Lebanon for the first time in the history of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Under a UN mandate, the Kazakh peacekeeping unit in Lebanon will patrol the area, organize observation posts, observe compliance with the ceasefire.   

The US Deputy Secretary of State underlined that she has discussed the further cooperation in the fight against terrorism, including in the territory of Afghanistan, with Kazakh colleagues. 

"One can also notice the efforts of Kazakhstan aimed at expanding the geography of cooperation. We had a good talk about the prevention and fight against terrorism. It also applies to the region of Afghanistan. We also discussed our commitment of the USA to combat terrorism. As for the bilateral format, one can observe that our relations have been strengthened in the economic sphere. Commerce Secretary Mr. Ross visited your country, who brought 16 American companies that once again outlined their interest in the strengthening of trade and economic relations with Kazakhstan. This was also reaffirmed by a series of memorandums reached between our states," said Alice Wells.

The White House representative welcomed the implementation of an ambitious programme to instruct lessons in the three languages and introduce the English language in schools. 

"I would like to note the Forum taken place in Tashkent in the economic field, and we can see a big potential as Kazakhstan works to create the interconnectedness in various corridors so to realize the entire potential of the region. One can witness the leadership of Kazakhstan has played an important role. Today we are to continue our discussion and debates and will discuss all aspects of our cooperation regarding both bilateral and multilateral formats. I would like to express once again our commitment and wish of our states to further strengthen our cooperation. We will keep on negotiating over Kazakhstan's ambitious programme to instruct in the three languages and introduce the English language with your languages," said Alice Wells. 

In turn, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Ashikbayev noted that during the meeting with the American counterpart, the sides managed to review the work conducted since the year's beginning on a wide range of bilateral cooperation and define perspective directions of partnership in the upcoming period.  

"I together with my American counterpart once again affirmed the importance to develop our relations for both sides. The matters that we have discussed today include the implementation of the agreements reached within the official visit of President Nazarbayev to the United States on January 16-18, 2018, as well as thee of political cooperation. One of the pillars of any inter-state cooperation is trade and economic relations and their quality. And it is the direction on which the Committee work, which is to discuss prospects for cooperation development in the economic field, the attraction of U.S. investment in the key sectors of the economy of Kazakhstan, the participation of the USA in diversifying and upgrading the domestic industry and many others," said Yerzhan Ashikbayev. 

He has also announced that next year Kazakhstan intends to further keep a high pace of mutual political and economic contacts with the USA under the agreements of the leaders of the two states.
